Screening:

It started raining: Fighting for the right to housing

6 pm / Institut für Europäische Ethnologie, Mohrenstraße 40/41, 10117 Berlin (Room 408)

We are pleased to invite you to the screening of ‘A început ploaia/It started raining: Fighting for the right to housing in Bucharest’ (72 min) in presence of the director. Accordingly to Amnesty International, in Romania ‘the right to housing is not effectively recognized or protected by national legislation’ and Roma people are ‘disproportionally affected’ by forced evictions. A început ploaia is the first feature documentary narrating the full history of, and reasons behind, these evictions, as well as showing the powerful resistance enacted by a community of Roma who dwelt on the street for two years in order to fight for their right to housing.

The documentary was researched and directed by Dr Michele Lancione, Senior Research Fellow at the Urban Institute, University of Sheffield. Michele followed a collaborative and activist-oriented approach to develop the film with the community of Vulturilor and the grass-roots activist group FCDL, of which he is part of (Common Front for the Right to Housing). The aim of this project is to offer a political tool to elicit debates and solidarity around the fight for the right to housing worldwide.
